Maternal Mental Health. Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy
We all find ways to cope through our circumstances, whether they are optimal or not. It is the resilient human spirit. And this is also true with unresolved trauma, if not more so.
Do any of the following sound familiar?:
These are strategies we may have found to be effective at some point. However, these survival mechanisms are not meant to lead to long-term thriving. With support and with the use of effective trauma recovery therapies, you can experience healing and even posttraumatic growth.
What is posttraumatic growth?
Posttraumatic growth is an idea that explains positive transformation after a traumatic event. It doesn't negate the pain, loss, or despair suffered by the trauma. Rather, it acknowledges that it is a process that takes a lot of time and energy, but with an outcome of having a new appreciation for life or the ability to make new meaning in life or of oneself.
Journey Together Horse Ranch uses a holistic approach to healing trauma and acknowledges the importance of attending to both the body and mind.
"Bottom-up" approaches are employed to support the lower portions of your brain - the part that is outside of logical thought and language. Eye-Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) and Brainspotting are two modalities I use, in particular, to treat trauma. Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (CBT) is useful when working through the negative thoughts that are prevalent with trauma (i.e., thoughts associated with not being good enough).
Equine-facilitated psychotherapy is a wonderful way to bring all of this together! Horses support bottom-up processing and allow for an exploration of disruptive thought patterns.
