You've Done Talk Therapy & You Want Something More

Equine-Assisted Therapy Takes What You Know To A Deeper Level

Talk therapy helped, but it didn't change your life.

Have you ever thought this to yourself?:

  • I know what my problem is, but I still can't seem to change it
  • I know what I'm "supposed" to think, but I don't feel any different
  • I could get an "A" in therapy - I'm so good at saying the "correct" things

Having insights about yourself - your thoughts, feelings, relationship patterns - are all great and important!  But sometimes "knowing" isn't enough.  You may have found that talking about your problems and trying to gain insight only gets you so far and hasn't produced any real or lasting change.   Change requires practice, and practice requires experiences.

This is where horses come in!  When we ask horses to be in relationship with us, they not only hold sacred space for us, but they engage us to actively work through the things that hold us back from being our most authentic selves.

Hi! I'm Brandy.

If you relate to feeling stuck with knowing a lot about yourself but not knowing how to transform that knowledge into change, you are certainly not alone.

That's why I love working with horses.  You can't talk your way around the problem.

You can get an "A" or gold stars in talk therapy, but horses don't lie.

If you want something different because you've tried talk therapy and it wasn't helpful or was only helpful for a time, then give equine-assisted therapy a try!

Equine-Assisted Therapy Can Help If You...

...Want To Feel More Secure In Your Relationships

Whether it's a romantic relationship, a parent-child relationship, or a friendship, all of us bring our "stuff" into relationships.  Sometimes that "stuff" looks like being unable to say "no" or not wanting to displease others.  Sometimes it's not knowing how to re-engage after a conflict.

Relationships can feel so risky and vulnerable.

Working through our "stuff" with horses is much less risky than trying to figure those things out in our human relationships.  That's because horses won't judge you.  They will, however, help you practice showing up differently in relationship with them.  If you want to feel more secure in your relationships, then equine-assisted therapy can help.

...Want Calmness In Your Life

We can't always control the events (and definitely not people) around us, but we do have choice in how we respond.  Perhaps you have found yourself living in a pattern of survival - reacting and tired of fighting.  You might be on the brink of burnout.  Equine-assisted therapy can help you attend to and regulate your nervous system, allowing you to find peace despite what's going on around you.   Equine-assisted therapy actively disrupts the fight or flight response so you can get unstuck from unhelpful survival strategies.

...Want To Stop Worrying And Start Living

Worry and anxiety strip us from living fully and vibrantly.  Worry takes us out of the present moment, and we miss out.  We think that if we worry, then we can somehow control future outcomes.  Unfortunately, all this does is deplete us of energy.

There is often a natural response of becoming more present when around horses.  In our day to day, we might remind ourselves to try and be more present for our family or that we should practice mindfulness because it's "good" for us.  But those "should" statements are counterproductive.  However, with horses, often times we notice that we become more present just by being in their presence.  We gain the experience of knowing what presence feels like, which then allows us to take that experience to other areas in our lives.

So, whether it's fears about parenting/motherhood, work, finances, or relationships, equine-assisted therapy is an active therapy to help you "get out of your head" and experience greater fullness in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach me at BrandyBurch@JourneyTogetherHorseRanch.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

There is a growing body of evidence that human-animal interactions promote emotional and physical wellness. Many people experience a feeling of safety with animals, including horses, which may or may not be present in their human relationships. From this feeling of safety and acceptance, much can be accomplished.

Here are a few reasons why horses are so uniquely powerful in aiding therapeutic growth:

  1. Increased awareness of your nervous system
  2. Better able to regulate your nervous system
  3. Learn how to connect with yourself and others in a way that honors both parties
  4. Practice making requests in a relationship (yes, the relationship with your horse is a real relationship), as well as practice setting boundaries
  5. Actively work through attachment and relationship wounds

When you spend time around horses, you may find yourself adopting and living by these values:

  • Being present and living in the here and now
  • Being embodied (i.e., the act of being in/connected to our bodies)
  • Living authentically and congruently (no more hiding parts of yourself!)

That's the thing about working with horses - when you work with them, you are developing a real relationship. How you go about developing that relationship is up to you and your horse. Nonetheless, there are some general ways to facilitate connection, such as:

  • Observing and meeting the herd - introduce yourself and get to know each horse and his or her unique personality. This is a practice of being present and embodied.

  • "Horse activities" - haltering, leading, lunging, grooming. Guess what?  It's NOT about the activity or accomplishing the task. It IS about asking for connection. It IS about showing up congruently and authentically, and it IS about resourcing your nervous system in order to communicate effectively.

  • Mounted work: Being in full connection with the horse and the horse's movement      can be a powerful experience. Mounted work is reserved for when the relationship has reached a mutual level of trust and safety.

  • Experiential learning and play. Play is one of the best ways to support your nervous system that as adults we all too often neglect! The reason equine-facilitated psychotherapy is so powerful is because what we do is experiential. It's not about acquiring cognitive knowledge and insights.  It's felt and experienced on a somatic level, which gives way to deeper learning.

Not at all!  Equine-assisted therapy is about working through the things you have identified you want to work on, and horses happen to be how I support your goals.

Closed-toe shoes are required for working with the horses.  Layers of clothing and sun protection are encouraged given the changing and sometimes unpredictable nature of weather.
